A Pale View Of Hills won him the Winifred Holtby Prize, An Artist Of The Floating World won him the Whitbread Book of the Year Award, the Primio Scanno, and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. The Unconsoled was the winner of the Cheltenham Prize, and When We Were Orphans and Never Let Me Go were shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. He received the French decoration of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and an OBE for Services to Literature.
