Perumal Murugan is a distinguished Indian author, scholar, and literary chronicler who writes in Tamil. Born on October 15, 1966, in Thiruchengode, a village in Tamil Nadu, he emerged as the first in his family to receive formal education, eventually earning a doctorate in Tamil literature. Murugan has served as a professor of Tamil at the Government Arts College in Namakkal and currently holds the position of Principal at Anna College in Namakkal.Murugan's literary oeuvre encompasses twelve novels, six collections of short stories, six anthologies of poetry, and numerous non-fiction works. His narratives often delve into the intricacies of rural Tamil life, addressing themes such as caste dynamics, social customs, and personal identity. Notable works include Seasons of the Palm, which was shortlisted for the Kiriyama Prize in 2005; One Part Woman, longlisted for the National Book Award for Translated Literature; Pyre, longlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2023; and Fire Bird, which won the JCB Prize for Literature in 2023.
