The story follows the protagonist Winston Smith a low-ranking member of the ruling Party who secretly rebels against the oppressive regime. Winston starts an illicit affair with Julia a fellow Party member and together they begin to question the Partys authority and seek out forbidden knowledge and experiences. As Winstons rebellion deepens he becomes increasingly paranoid and fearful of being caught by the Partys thought police. Eventually Winston and Julia are captured and tortured until they are fully indoctrinated into the Partys ideology and their rebellious thoughts and feelings are completely erased. 1984 is a powerful critique of totalitarianism propaganda and government surveillance and has become a classic of dystopian literature. The books themes of freedom individuality and the dangers of government control continue to resonate with readers today and its depiction of a society ruled by fear and oppression remains a cautionary tale for generations to come.
