Apu has a younger sister Suchitra who also studies medicine like their father. She is now settled with her husband and children in San Jose US. After Doctor Bannerjee’s death his wife Jaya goes to live with Suchitra in the US. their house in Delhi A 46 Gulabganj is kept boarded up and shut; waiting to be sold off. Apu eventually marries Shashank Chowdhry a former student of Doctor Bannerjee. The two of them decide not to sell off the house and make A 46 Gulabganj their home. After moving back in Apu relives the memories of her childhood and youth. The Tam Brahms and other short stories is a series of incidents of her life as narrated by her.
