Hunt Helen Jacksons well-known exposé details the exploitation and murder that Native Americans endured in the 18th and 19th centuries. By that time the idea of allotted reservations as a means of resolving land disputes had been in existence for many years. The European colonial invaders had spent more than a century driving the native North American population back at this point.
