Agriculture is the main economical occupation of the Chhattisgarh state. About 80% of the population of the state is lived in Rural areas and agriculture is the main occupation of villagers.Bilaspur district has 4 lakh 53 thousand 5 hundred 32 hectares of cultivable land out of which 3 lakh 73 thousand 4 hundred twenty six are being used for agriculture. Irrigation facility is not very developed in the Bilaspur district.The dependency of the population on agriculture in Bilaspur district is very high because over 80% of population lives in the village whose only means of livelihood is agriculture. Traditional methods are used for agricultural work in the study area.Horticulture and animal husbandry also engage a major part of agricultural activities.In Chhattisgarh rice is the main crop grown in about Thirty seven lakh hectares covering seventy seven percent of net sown area. Only about 20% area is irrigated and rest under other conditions.
