A critical Examination of the Value Added Tax and its Economic Impact

The book ''A Critical Assessment of the Value Added Tax and Its Economic Impact''is a product of research work which speak volumes of the vital roles which the Value Added Tax plays in developing economies like the Nigerian economy and other countries.The economic history of both the developed and developing countries reveals that taxation is an important weapon in the hands of government not only to generate revenue but also to achieve fiscal goals.Fiscal goals include discouraging importation of foreign goods and encouraging local goods production in order to boost up GDP and also ensuring proper control of consumption of certain harmful goods such as cigarettes alcohol etc. Value Added Tax system does not affect the availability of necessary infrastructure in Nigeria. Also a survey of VATable Nigeria manufacturers distributors importers and suppliers of goods and services organizations was conducted to gain insights into the way VAT is treated by these organizations.it was discovered that they all transferred VAT incidences to the final consumers. Based on the above findings it is therefore recommended that VAT rate should be reduced in order for prices of goods to go down.
