A Gardener for Man is an attempt to evaluate William Langland´s poem `The Vision of Piers Plowman´ in the light of its Fourteenth Century background and also in terms of its relevance to the modern world. The poem holds up a mirror to medieval society and reflects a world driven by the cash machine and neglectful of its social responsibilities. In the person of Piers Plowman a saviour is found who becomes the effective Gardener of Mankind. In a modern world driven by neo-liberal economics and threatened by climate change we too need to find a new way of addressing the problems of society and the environment. Perhaps the example of Piers Plowman points the way? A retired history teacher David Conduct now lives in Durham where he taught for over twenty years. A graduate of the universities of Hull London Warwick and Leicester his main academic interest lies in the history of ideas.
