Taxila was an important city of ancient india. Founded around 1000 BCE Taxila has changed hands many times over the centuries with many polities vying for its control. Ancient Taxila was the seat of a major university where Chanakya the author of the Arthashastra studied. The present guide by archaeologist Sir John Marshall who was in charge of excavations at the site was first published in 1918 gives a detailed overview of the excavations of the ancient site. Taxila was declare d a World Heritage site in 1980.
