The trading house Sandgaard which Kielland designed using the family's own trading house Jacob Kielland & Sn as a model is where the story is set in and around Stavanger. The book alternates between the old trade house which struggles financially the burgeoning petty bourgeoisie led by the Haugians and the skipper's club to paint a comprehensive image of the city's different settings.
