China. 1938. A young boy of thirteen watches as enemy planes bomb his township. As war approaches the boy and his brother cross the Pacific to join their father working in America. Separated from their mother they exchange letters with her from the other side of the world. Then one day her letters stop coming. Thirty-five years later Yot Lim takes his family back to his village to find out what became of her. They visit the small brick house where he was born. There on the wall hangs a photograph of his mother that he's never seen before - and it becomes everything to him.
