About The Book

The book is divided into three parts. The first part Brussels and Bruges describes Sinclairs experiences in these two cities focusing on their art and architecture as well as the culture and customs of the Belgian people. She also reflects on the tensions between the French-speaking and Flemish-speaking communities in Belgium. The second part The War in Belgium is a harrowing account of Sinclairs experiences during the early days of World War I. She describes the German invasion of Belgium and the devastation it caused including the burning of Louvain and the destruction of the medieval town of Dinant. Sinclair also provides firsthand accounts of the bravery and resilience of the Belgian people in the face of the invasion.
