When Gandhi came across Tolstoy's 1963 letter A Letter to a Hindu which was sent to an Indian nationalist seeking support for India's independence from British colonial authority they became acquainted. Gandhi decided to write to Tolstoy and seek for permission to publish the letter in South Africa because he was so moved by Tolstoy's ideals. The Letter is a reflection of India's rich legacy and cultural traditions and contains insights from some of the greatest brains of the pre-independence period.
