A Lover’s Complaint

The poem is structured in seven-line stanzas and it is written in the form of a monologue by the young woman. She describes her sorrow and despair at being abandoned by her lover and she reflects on the nature of love and the fickleness of men. Throughout the poem the woman addresses her lover directly expressing her anger and frustration at his abandonment of her. She also reflects on her own feelings of love and devotion and she questions whether her feelings were genuine or merely an illusion. Despite the womans emotional turmoil the poem ends on a note of hope. She realizes that her love for her lover has made her a better person and she vows to move on and find happiness in the future.
