Originally published in London, Solomon Bayley's 1825 book was one of the earliest slave narratives from an African American enslaved in the U.S. In the narrative, Bayley expresses his Christian faith and discusses trying to escape and attempting to sue for his freedom. After the narrative was published, Bayley eventually emigrated to Liberia, where he worked as a Christian missionary.
