A Philological Approach to English

Philology is the branch of linguistics which seeks to investigate and describe how and why languages develop in the course of time. Its domain is language in terms of diachronic approach. Therefore historical linguistics should not be regarded as a minor scope in the study of language. All linguistic fields do not function in isolation hence justifying the claim to dependent status of synchronic linguistics. Importance should be equally given to diachronic and synchronic consideration vis-à-vis linguists concerned with the study of any particular language.
