A Popular Schoolgirl

A Popular Schoolgirl by Angela Brazil follows the story of Ingred Saxon a young girl facing significant changes in her life as she returns to school after the summer holidays. The Saxon family once affluent has been financially affected by the war leading them to move from their grand home Rotherwood to a smaller bungalow on the moors. This change is a source of embarrassment for Ingred who is concerned about how her schoolmates will perceive her now that she can no longer host the lavish parties she was known for. As the new term begins at Grovebury College which has just moved to a new building Ingred is apprehensive about the changes and the reactions of her peers. Despite her initial fears she finds solace in the camaraderie of her roommates at the hostel forming a close-knit group called The Foursome League with Verity Nora and Filomena. The narrative explores themes of adaptation resilience and the importance of friendship in overcoming personal challenges. Ingred's journey is one of self-discovery as she learns to navigate her new circumstances with grace and determination ultimately finding her place in the school community and gaining confidence in her abilities particularly in music under the guidance of the eccentric Dr. Linton.
