The first book of Irish author James Joyce is titled A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. It is a modernist Künstlerroman that follows the spiritual and intellectual growth of young Stephen Dedalus a fictional alter ego of James Joyce and a reference to Daedalus the master craftsman from Greek mythology. Stephen fights against the Catholic and Irish traditions that have guided his upbringing ultimately leading to his self-exile from Ireland to Europe.
