What was Hollywood's Golden Age? John Howard Reid has been reviewing films for leading newspapers and magazines for over 50 years. For me Reid says the movies' Golden Age extends from 1925 to 1955. In other words from near the end of the Silent Period to near the beginning of TV's dominance of visual entertainment. So the movies covered in this book range from celebrated crowd and critic pleasers like After the Thin Man to more controversial motion pictures such as Touch of Evil as directed by Orson Welles and Vertigo one of many triumphs for Alfred Hitchcock. In all 125 films are covered in detail with complete cast and production credits as well as reviews and a further 60 movies are presented with reviews only. Many of these movies of course are now available on DVD and a surprising number are still broadcast on TV.
