It should however be kept in mind that the writer of a legal text-book often cites cases which are not decisions sustaining the statement in his text but only contain dicta or perhaps a discussion of the matter in hand or a reference to it without any expression of opinion by the court. A writer who undertakes to make a reasonably full citation of authorities would be considered much in fault if he merely cited those decisions which squarely meet and sustain his text....
