Tucker's 1827 novel was in fact not only one of the earliest attempts at science fiction by an American author but it is also one of the first known depiction of antigravity as well as some novel views of utopian societies in the denizens of the moon in literature. Tucker was one of Edgar Allan Poe's university instructors and this novel was an important influence on Poe's decision to write his own space travel novel.
