<p>In 1880s Baltimore an ambitious 18-year-old bookkeeper strives to prove herself in the male-dominated business world while navigating family tragedy society's limitations on women and her new husband's escalating paranoia and violence.</p><p>Baltimore Maryland is on the cusp of change with the railroad offering both positive change and disruption. Abigail meets Avery a captivating but volatile businessman who harbors a grudge against the railroad. They marry and Abigail navigates the complexities of her new role as a wife and the tension between her ambitions and Avery's increasingly erractic behavior.</p><p>She is forced to face the grim truth of her circumstances. She sells her candy story which she inherits from her dying father and she chooses to take care of her husband. Avery however in Abigail's absence becomes criminally violent and destroys the railroad spur which is continguous to his land and becomes a hunted man. When Abigail returns she uses all of her resources from the sale of her business to secure a fair trial for her husband. Avery however unable to accept his dire fate drinks himself into oblivion. Abigail is widowed with nothing left. She loses her business her home and her husband. Abigail forges a path of self-discovery. She finds contentment through the Woman's Exchange where women are uplifting each other through hardship.
