Realizing the importance of land conveyance records to any genealogist who may attempt to write biography and knowing that the Rockingham County deed records were partly burned in 1864 thereby effacing many deeds the authors of this book have made an abstract and index of land surveys of Augusta and Rockingham counties from 1751 to 1791. There is recorded in these abstracts the name of the person for whom the survey was made the location of the land and the name of the owner or owners of the adjoining land. These surveys were made for original land patents by Thomas Lewis surveyor for Augusta County and later for Rockingham County from April 23 1751 to February 22 1782. The entries from 1782 to 1791 were made by Alexander Herring surveyor for Rockingham County. The assistants were John Poage James Trrimble Wm. Preston Andrew Lewis Gawn Hamilton John Lincoln and Ralph Lofftus. There are approximately 2000 individuals cited in the text and approximately 4000 listed in multiple references in the index.
