Early Life and Ideals: Adeline is raised by her mother with a liberal education which instills in her strong principles and a sense of independence. She grows up questioning the societal norms particularly the institution of marriage. Relationship with Frederic Glenmurray: Adeline falls in love with Frederic Glenmurray a man who shares her progressive views. They decide to live together without getting married believing that their mutual respect and love are enough to sustain their relationship. Social Ostracism: Society harshly judges Adeline for her unconventional relationship. Despite their genuine affection and commitment to each other they face severe social ostracism and economic hardship.
