West Bengal is enormously blessed with a thousand and one opportunities in the untapped areas of animal husbandry fisheries and food processing. Dairying is considered to be playing a crucial role in the economy of our state. Livestock comprising mainly cattle and buffaloes has a complimentary supplementary and sustainable relationship with crops under the mixed farming system prevalent in our country. Thus the rural economy is closely associated with dairy farming which plays a vital role in our country''s economy. It also helps in augmenting the food supply generating employment and raising nutritional levels. The state has a total bovine count of about 17.11 million of which superior cross-bred / up-graded cattle is 3.75 million. The State produces 4.9 million tonnes of milk annually. But only 2% of total production is being marketed by the organized sector. The state has a little over 0.6 million Buffaloes Recent advances in animal husbandry have demonstrated that scientific management and high-yielding animals have great potential for maximization of milk production. Systematic knowledge plan and adoption of some of the modern dairy management practices.
