Organometallic Compounds are Organic Compounds of metals. In these compounds metal- carbon bond is present. These compounds have ionic or covalent localised or delocalised bonding between one or more carbon atoms of organic – group or molecule and transition lanthanide actinide- or main group metal-atom. Because organic compounds are hydrocarbon or their derivatives hence in organometallic compounds generally those compounds are included in which one or more hydrocarbon radical(s) are directly linked with metal atom. In this respect metal-carbides metal carbonates metal cyanides metal carboxylates (and also metal carbonyls) should not be included in organo metallic compounds Metal carbonates and metal carboxylates are not organometallic compounds as they do not have metal- carbon bond. While although metal- carbides and metal- cyanides have metal-carbon bond they are not organic compounds. As a matter of fact organometallic chemistry functions as a bridge between organic and inorganic chemistry.
