Alcohol and women

About The Book

Epidemiological studies have shown an increase in alcohol consumption and alcohol dependence among women something that until then was mostly considered a male problem in Brazil. It seems that the process of female emancipation has brought to the social scene a character who remained invisible for a long time: the alcoholic woman. This book based on socio-anthropological literature on the health-disease process (chapters 5 to 8) and from a gender perspective (chapters 9 to 11) investigates alcohol dependence among women. Its ultimate aim will be to understand the meanings and significance of female alcohol dependence among men and women in the process of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous.
