About The Book

Alexander the Great is a figure of great historical significance who lived during the fourth century BC. He was born in Pella the capital of Macedon in 356 BC and was the son of King Philip II of Macedon and Queen Olympias. Alexander was educated by the philosopher Aristotle and developed a love of learning and a passion for conquest at a young age. He became king at the age of 20 after his fathers assassination and spent the next 13 years leading his army on a series of conquests that would establish the Macedonian Empire as the dominant power in the ancient world. Alexanders conquests began with the Greek city-states which he brought under his control by defeating the armies of Athens and Thebes. He then turned his attention to the Persian Empire which he defeated in a senes of battles including the famous Battle of Gaugamela in 331 BC. This victory secured his hold on the Persian Empire and allowed him to expand his empire even further into Egypt and beyond. One of Alexanders most significant achievements was the founding of numerous cities including Alexandria in Egypt. These cities became centers of learning and culture spreading Greek language and ideas throughout the ancient world. Alexander was also known for his interest in science and medicine and he is said to have encouraged the study of these subjects among his soldiers. Despite his military prowess Alexander was a complex and often enigmatic figure. He was known for his charisma and his ability to inspire his troops but he was also capable of great cruelty and ruthlessness as evidenced by his treatment of conquered peoples. He was a man of great ambition and vision but his success was also due to his ability to adapt to changing circumstances and to make bold decisions in the face of adversity.
