மனித நாகரிக வளர்ச்சிக்கு கிரேக்கம் அளித்த பங்களிப்புக்கு சற்றும் குறைவானதல்ல இந்திய மறுமலர்ச்சிக்கு வங்காளம் அளித்த பங்களிப்பு. வங்காளத்துக்குப் பெருமை சேர்த்தவர்களின் பட்டியலில் முதலிடத்தைப் பிடிப்பவர் ஈஸ்வர சந்திர வித்யாசாகர். சில சமயம் ரவீந்திரநாத் தாகூரின் பெயர் வித்யாசாகருக்கு மாற்றாக முன்மொழியப் படுவதுண்டு. ஆனால் தாகூரோ வித்யாசாகரைநான் நம்மில் முதல் மனிதராகக் கருதுகிறேன் என்று அதிசயித்து அவரது சாதனைகளைக் கொண்டாடியிருக்கிறார். வங்காளியர்கள் தங்களுக்குள் சாதாரணமாகப் பேசிக்கொள்ளும்போது கூட ஒரு நாளைக்குக் குறைந்தது ஐந்தாறு முறையாவது வித்யாசாகரின் பெயரைப் பெருமை பொங்க உச்சரித்து விடுகிறார்கள். வித்யாசாகரின் வாழ்க்கையிலிருந்து பல சம்பவங்களை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் பூரிப்புடன் நினைவுகூர்கிறார்கள். இந்திய சுதந்தரப் போராட்டக் காலகட்டத்தில் போராட்டம் பொதுப்பணி எழுத்து கல்வி என்று இவரைப் போல் பரந்துபட்டு இயங்கியவர்கள் வெகு சிலரே. அவரது அத்தனை சாதனைகளையும் விஞ்சி நிற்பவை அவரது அமைதியும் கருணையும் ஒப்பற்ற மனித நேயமும்தாம். வித்யாசாகரின் அசாதாரணமான வாழ்க்கை வரலாறை சுவைபட விவரிக்கும் நூலாசிரியர் சு. கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி ஒரு தேர்ந்த மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளரும் கூட. குருதிப் புனல் ஆங்கில மொழிபெயர்ப்புக்காக இவருக்கு சாகித்ய அகாதெமி விருது வழங்கப்பட்டது. மேலும் திருப்பூர் தமிழ்ச் சங்க விருது உள்பட பல பரிசுகளையும் பெற்றிருக்கிறார். Eswara Chandra Vidyasagar comes first in the list of those who brought glory to Bengal. Sometimes the name of Rabindranath Tagore used to be recommended in place of Vidyasagar. But Tagore has celebrated Vidyasagar achievements with these words I consider him as a pioneer. Bengalis proudly refer to Vidyasagar name at least four or five time during their day to day conversation and elatedly bring back to their minds some events of his life time and again. His services included a variety of fields like political struggle writing and education. Few worked so widely like him during the Indian Independence Struggle. But of all his achievements it is his tranquility mercy and humanitarianism that stand out surpassing all. Su Krishnamurthi the author who explains Vidyasagar biography more interestingly than history is also a translator. He was given Sahitya Academy Award for his translation of Kurudip Punal novel. He has also bagged many other awards including the Tirupur Tamil Sanga Award.
