AN ECOCRITICAL READING OF THE TESS OF THE D’URBERVILLES

The book shows how to apply the theory of Ecocriticism to a novel. Nature has often been thought of as a mere background and a setting. We have seen during COVID how Nature blossomed and flourished when humans kept themselves inside closed doors. The sky trees animals flowers fruits land and air have an independent existence and we are dependent on the said elements of nature. Novels often take these elements and use them as symbols motifs and themes. This theory keeps at its heart the importance of the environment addressing many urgent issues of the ecosystem including environmental degradation in an agrarian economy.
