In 2020 the UK formally withdrew from the European Union after the 2016 EU referendum. As a result of Brexit the UK is no longer restrained by EU bureaucracy; a proposition many found attractive. However a direct and somewhat alarming consequence of this is no longer having to adhere to the checks and balances of membership which require robust human rights across the member states. As the UK moves into territory where refugees are deported to Rwanda and threats to leave the European Convention on Human Rights are made by the Conservative government (Spurrier 2022) the reality of other controversial responses to controlling the population becomes conceivable. This could include the re-introduction of the death penalty...
