About The Book

Anabasis is a historical account written by the ancient Greek philosopher and historian Xenophon. It tells the story of the expedition of Cyrus the Younger a Persian prince who sought to overthrow his brother King Artaxerxes II and take the throne for himself. Xenophon who joined the expedition as a mercenary provides a detailed narrative of the campaign including the battles intrigues and betrayals that led to the eventual defeat of Cyrus and his army at the Battle of Cunaxa. The surviving Greek mercenaries then faced a perilous retreat through hostile territory during which Xenophon emerged as a key leader and strategist. Anabasis is celebrated for its vivid descriptions of ancient warfare and its insights into the political and social structures of the Persian Empire. It is also notable for its use of personal narrative and its emphasis on the role of individual leadership and courage in times of crisis. Considered a classic of Greek literature Anabasis continues to be studied and admired for its literary and historical significance.
