Pamphilus is in love with Glycerium a young woman of uncertain parentage but his father wants him to marry Philumena the daughter of Chremes. Charinus meanwhile is also in love with Philumena creating further complications.</p> <p>The plot thickens with mistaken identities misunderstandings and the intervention of various characters including the wily slave Davus who tries to manipulate events to his own advantage. Through clever dialogue and intricate plotting Terence explores themes of love family social status and the challenges of navigating societal expectations.
