ANKAHI highlights the typical social and family environment prevailing in the north Indian middle-class society of the 1980s. It is a story of a domestic woman Pushp with self-esteem who has a persistent strong desire to change the prevailing adverse circumstances of mistrust and insult wherein women like her even do not have the right to speak against injustice and there is no one to listen to their plight. The main theme of ANKAHI coming to existence is her persistent pleading Please someone should listen to us also. Pushp continues to raise questions time and again during the flow of the story. Somewhere she replies herself and elsewhere she leaves it for the society to decide and respond. She might have not been able to bring about substantially the desired changes in society but undoubtedly it is her untiring never-ending effort like that of the squirrel during the construction of Ram Setu.
