Anti-Adipogenic and Anti-Diabetic Activity of ���Mirabilis Jalapa���

Globally millions of people in the developing world rely on medicinal plants for primary health care income generation and livelihood improvement (WHO 2002). Indigenous people living on their traditional territory largely rely on medicinal plants for healthcare and they are therefore rich in ethno-pharmacological knowledge. Furthermore there is hardly any drug available for the complete and safe treatment of diseases in the modern system of medicine. While many drugs are been used in abundance for disease management they fall short of permanent cure of the disease while exerting serious side effects.Mirabilis Jalapa induced significant reductions in the blood glucose concentrations of normoglycemic hyperglycemic and STZ-induced diabetic rats. The findings of this investigation may therefore suggest that the plant extract could at least in part stimulate insulin production and glucose utilization to bring about its hypoglycemic effect in the mammalian experimental model used.
