About The Book

John Milton created the masque Arcades which was played on May 4 1634. The poem was created to honour Alice Spencer the Countess Dowager of Derby and the widow of Ferdinando Stanley the Fifth Earl of Derby on the occasion of her 75th birthday. By referring to Spencer as the queen of a figurative Arcadia that is far superior to all other realms the masque distinguishes Spencer as having a greater and superior quality to other noble women. The work was the inspiration for Milton's later masque Comus.
