Aristotle On Wisdom

About The Book

What is wisdom? Can one become wiser? Can wisdom besystematically acquired? This is an attempt to answerthose questions by formulating a concept of wisdomand a method by which it can be acquired. This workbuilds on Aristotle's insight into ethical theory byreconstructing his assumptions and arguments aboutmorality in order to abstract those concepts that maybe significant for the definition and acquisition ofwisdom with a view to establishing both their logicand their applicability to the present day. I arguethat becoming wiser is the most significant aspect inunderstanding wisdom because it entails an element ofpractice that can lead to human fulfilment. This workseeks to establish a clear and satisfactoryconceptualisation of wisdom arguing that Aristotle'sethical concepts of the hierarchy of ends virtue andthe chief good are not just abstractions aboutmorality and wisdom which have been a basis forprevious discussions of ethics. In conclusion Theapplication of one's knowledge of wisdom aims atattaining both the good for one's life as well as thegood for their society
