Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) are a prominent feature that shapes the global security landscape. SALW have the ability to shape the scope and durability of conflict. The amount of civilian lives lost due to their presence in conflict is enormous. SALW have had an impact on the number of internally displaced and international refugee flows. SALW’s abundant availability renders them very accessible commodities. It is commonly said that “guns don’t kill people people kill people” however their presence in conflict zones are a threat to human national and global security as they provide alternative means with which to settle political disputes.
