Volume III of the official history of British military medical services in the Second World War is largely devoted to Italy a conspicuously hard-fought campaign when conditions were often horrendous. The Medics went ashore with the first waves of troops landing at Salerno and Anzio - where forward dressing stations were established near the front lines of the embattled beachhead. Equally hard-fought was the tenacious German defence of the monastery atop Monte Cassino barring the road to Rome. the book also covers the liberation of Greece and the final months of the war in Germany itself.
