George MacDonald a Scottish novelist wrote the childrens book At the Back of the North Wind. In the book a small child named Diamond is the main character. He is a really kind youngster who spreads happiness everywhere he goes. He brings his familys tranquilly while battling hopelessness and doom. Diamond continually patches up a hole in the loft wall (which doubles as his bedroom) one night as he tries to get some rest. He quickly learns though that doing this prevents the North Wind from seeing through her window. She makes friends with Diamond and North Wind let him to soar with her so they may go on various adventures. Though the North Wind conducts wonderful actions and helps people she sometimes does seemingly dreadful things. She needs to sink a ship as part of one of her duties. But even her seemingly negative actions result in positive outcomes. The North Wind appears to symbolise Pain and Death acting in accordance with Gods plan for something positive.
