Atalanta In Calydon

Atalanta in Calydon is a poetic tragedy by Algernon Charles Swinburne that delves into themes of fate love and familial duty set against the backdrop of Greek mythology. The narrative centers on Althaea the queen of Calydon who is haunted by a prophecy concerning her son Meleager. The Fates foretold that Meleager's life would last only as long as a particular brand remained unburned. Althaea in an attempt to protect her son hides the brand. However the goddess Artemis angered by a slight from Meleager's father Oeneus sends a monstrous boar to ravage the land. A hunt is organized drawing heroes from across Greece including the virgin huntress Atalanta whom Meleager admires. Tensions rise when Meleager awards the boar's hide to Atalanta provoking his uncles Toxeus and Plexippus who attempt to take it from her. In the ensuing conflict Meleager kills them leading Althaea to a tragic decision. In her grief and rage she burns the brand fulfilling the prophecy and causing Meleager's death.
