The main objective of the study was to analyze the possibility of going beyond the work by competencies towards the development of the configurational and critical thinking framed in the socio-critical model in the middle of the sanitary contingency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This was based on a specific case in which the academic performance and attitudes of 139 students in the eighth grade of the San José Educational Institution in the municipality of Itagüí in the department of Antioquia (Colombia) are related. The results obtained indicate the need for a pedagogy that even in the midst of crisis seeks to encourage young people to learn in a more meaningful and transformative way.
