Written at various periods and frequently in detached fragments these reminis cences are sufficiently full to make when arranged in due order of time a connected narrative of the events and experiences of the years he deemed of chief interest or importance. Fail ing health prevented the accomplishment of his purpose to de scribe much more fully two periods 1842 to 1848 and 1852 to 1860 - which are but brie?y alluded to.<br><br>My duties have been confined to the verification of the dates and in placing as far as was practicable the several sections of the manuscript in chronological order. I am under great obli gations to my own and my father''s friend Mr. Frederick W.
