As <em>The New York Times</em>' Moscow bureau chief he covered major political and economic developments including Stalin's Five-Year Plans and the Soviet regime's consolidation of power. Though awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage his legacy remains controversial due to his denial of the Ukrainian Holodomor a stance that has been widely criticized for downplaying Soviet atrocities.</p><p></p>
