<p>Early May 2024 to my surprise a small owlet fell from its loving home atop a tall pine tree to the ground. I tried to chase the small owlet to smaller trees for its protection. In a few days it was able to hop to lower branches. The mother and father continued to watch their baby from other trees. I was privileged to watch the parents teach the owlet right in my backyard.</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Facts about the great American horned owls: </p><p></p><p></p><p>They can fly twenty to forty miles an hour.</p><p></p><p>They lay between one and four eggs.</p><p></p><p>Wing span can be as large as forty-eight to sixty inches and they weigh about three pounds.</p><p></p><p>Females are about 20 percent larger than males.</p><p></p><p>Owls can carry as much as nine pounds.</p><p></p><p> Owls can hear up to ten miles away. </p><p></p><p> Great American horned owls can move their heads 270 degrees.</p>
