Barchester Towers

<p><strong>Barchester Towers</strong> by Anthony Trollope is a satirical novel about power politics and social ambition in the Church of England. When a new bishop Dr. Proudie is appointed to the cathedral town of Barchester he arrives with his domineering wife Mrs. Proudie and her scheming ally the ambitious chaplain Mr. Slope. Their attempts to control church appointments and local affairs create conflict with the established clergy including the kind but traditional Archdeacon Grantly and the humble Mr. Harding.</p><p>Amid the church politics there's also a romantic plot involving the gentle widow Eleanor Bold courted by both Mr. Slope and others. The novel humorously portrays the clash between old traditions and new influences offering a sharp yet affectionate look at English provincial life.             </p><p></p><p></p><p></p>
