Barriers to adult tetanus vaccination

In adults tetanus vaccination coverage is insufficient with 62% of people up to date. 108 cases of tetanus were reported between 2002 and 2007 with a case fatality rate of 30%. Re-vaccination of adults is an important issue that relies on the involvement of general practitioners. This qualitative study required 4 focus groups in which 14 general practitioners participated. Data analysis was performed using N Vivo 8 software. Among the obstacles to tetanus vaccination coverage we find limited consultation time to discuss vaccination a lack of communication from the public authorities and the absence of information for patients by health professionals. Patients are not aware of the importance of booster vaccination and have a false image of tetanus. Vaccination coverage could be improved by the use of combined tetanus and influenza vaccines a media vaccination campaign and possible financial incentives for physicians who reach their vaccination coverage targets.
