Volume 1 introduces the main characters and sets the stage for the conflict. Nevil is introduced as a courageous but occasionally irrational young man. He falls in love with Renée de Croisnel a brilliant and high-spirited French girl but she marries an elderly French aristocrat instead. Nevil then takes up his naval career again but he is restless and dissatisfied.Nevil eventually comes under the influence of Dr. Shrapnel a republican and freethinker. Dr. Shrapnel encourages Nevil to pursue a career in politics and Nevil stands for Parliament as a Radical. However Nevil is defeated in the election and he becomes increasingly disillusioned with the political process.Volume 1 ends with Nevil in a perilous situation. He is falsely accused of assaulting his uncle Everard Romfrey a staunchly Conservative peer. Nevil is forced to flee the country and he vows to return and fight for his beliefs.Beauchamp's Career Volume 1 is a complex and challenging novel but it is also a rewarding one. Meredith's writing is full of insights into human nature and the political and social forces that shape our lives. The novel is also a powerful celebration of the human spirit and the power of idealism to overcome even the most difficult challenges.
