Bertha Garlan is a novel by the Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler which appeared in 1900 and 1901 in the literary magazine New German Rundschau in Berlin. Later on it was published as a book by the publisher S. Fischer. The protagonist Bertha Garlan a widow living in a small town meets again in Vienna her childhood sweetheart the celebrated violin virtuoso Emil Lindbach. For a brief moment she hopes to escape the provincial narrowness of her existence.
