By the beginning of the 20th century Islam and Hinduism had coexisted in India for over a thousand years. Barring the occasional outbursts of violence the two religious communities had lived together peacefully and shared strong social bonds except marriage. English education however drove a wedge between the communities. India of the early 1930s consisted of a great mass of poor and illiterate people who were exploited by the rich and powerful irrespective of caste or religion. The author has sympathy for these poor and toiling masses are clearly reflected in his writings. It is against this backdrop that Premchand wrote Karmabhumi.His real name was Dhanpat Rai but he is better known by his pen name Munshi Premchand. He has been read and studied both in India and abroad as one of the greatest writers of the century. Premchand's literary career started as a freelancer in Urdu. In his initial short stories he has depicted the patriotic upsurge that was sweeping the country in the first decade of the 19th century. In 1914 Premchand started writing in Hindi. Premchand was the first Hindi author to introduce realism in his writings. He pioneered the new art form of fiction with a social purpose. He wrote of the life around him and made his readers aware of the problems of the urban middle-class and the country's villages. Besides being a great novelist Premchand was also a social reformer and thinker. Nirmala is the story of a young girl who is married to an elderly man due to the lack of dowry after her father's death. It describes the misfortune and suspicions that she has to face and her downfall after the continuous stress and mental trauma that she has to go through. The story very well depicts the pathetic social condition of women during that era.Godan is a Hindi novel by Munshi Premchand It was first published in 1936 and is considered one of the greatest Hindustani novels of modern Indian literature. Themed around the socio economic deprivation as well as the exploitation of the village poor the novel was the last complete novel of Premchand.Munshi Premchand's real name was Dhanpat Rai. He was born on 31 July 1880 in Lamhi village in Banaras. He was born into a middle class family which made him keenly observe the poverty and disadvantages of the middle class society. He dedicated his whole life to Hindi literature. He was honoured with the titles of a short-story writer a novelist and a social reformer. He died on 8 October 1936. In this collection of short stories Premchand has thrown light on the different aspects of society such as social systems faith and religion. The story 'Kafan' reflects the poverty-stricken upbringing of Premchand and depicts the struggles of the poor for survival.Gaban is a Hindi novel by Munshi Premchand written in 1931. Through this novel he tries to show the falling moral values among lower middle class Indian youth in the era of British India and to what heights a person can get to to reach the world of elite classand maintain the false image as a rich person. It tells the story of Ramanath a handsome pleasure seeking boastful but a morally weak person who tries to make his wife Jalpa happy by gifting her jewelry which he can't really afford to buy via his meager salary and then gets engulfed in a web of debts which ultimately forces him to commit embezzlement. It is considered Premchand's best work after Godaan.
